Nike has one of the biggest stars in women's tennis wearing the Swoosh in Aryna Sabalenka. But as Coco Gauff continues building one of the most powerful individual brands in the sport, an uncomfortable question is becoming harder to ignore.
Did Nike miss an opportunity with Coco?
Sabalenka has been connected with Nike since 2017 and remains one of the company's most recognizable female tennis athletes. Her explosive personality, aggressive playing style and success at the top of women's tennis make it easy to understand why a global sportswear giant would want her representing the brand.
But even Sabalenka has publicly expressed frustration with how Nike has handled her tennis apparel.
After receiving more input on one of her custom looks, Aryna joked that fans might need to pressure Nike on social media because her 2026 clothing would not be as special as she wanted. Nike eventually produced custom looks for her during the season, but the situation highlighted an interesting contrast.
Because Coco Gauff is receiving something very different from New Balance.
Gauff already has her own signature tennis shoe, the Coco CG2, complete with personalized branding and design elements connected directly to her identity. New Balance has increasingly built products and campaigns around Coco rather than simply having her wear standard tennis apparel.
That strategy became even more obvious in 2026.
For the Australian Open, New Balance worked directly with Coco on a custom collection inspired by her personality and style. For the first time, fans were also able to purchase a version of Gauff's tournament kit themselves.
Then came another enormous fashion crossover through New Balance's collaboration with Miu Miu featuring Coco.
Suddenly, this is about much more than tennis results.
Sabalenka remains an extraordinary champion and one of the most commercially valuable athletes in women's tennis. In fact, recent earnings estimates place her among the highest-paid tennis players in the world.
But Coco is making an entirely different case.
She has signature footwear. She has personalized apparel. She has luxury-fashion collaborations. And she has become a centerpiece of New Balance's attempt to build a distinctive identity in tennis.
That creates the fascinating question surrounding Nike.
Sabalenka gives the company an established superstar at the top of the sport. Coco, meanwhile, demonstrates what can happen when a brand builds an entire product ecosystem around one athlete's identity.
There is no evidence that Nike directly chose Sabalenka instead of Gauff. Coco has been with New Balance since she was a teenager, and both partnerships developed independently.
But the comparison is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Nike has Aryna Sabalenka.
New Balance has built something uniquely Coco Gauff.
And as Coco's influence continues expanding far beyond the baseline, she is making an increasingly powerful case that betting heavily on an individual tennis star can produce something much bigger than another sponsorship logo.
