Level Name : Broadsides
Level Author : Proximity
Created On : 24th December, 2007
Whilst there are lot of recent releases from many authors, I decided to take a little throwback to a level which once had a perfect score, courtesy Baron, but the playthrough is unfortunately defunct now (Like God of War: Part 2). It is none other than Proximity's highly rated Broadsides which was once upon a time considered the best Shipyards level and is also Proximity's hardest level overall.
It had the best shaped ships and well orchestrated pathways in the ship decks accompanied by several innovative secrets (especially the skull secret besides the two ropes and two alternating togglepegs). Besides being creative, they are also incredibly deceiving. Especially the secrets are built in a way that the player can easily be mislead by distracting ladders and take the wrong route while the catnips being really tight doesn't help much either. So it definitely needs a cautious approach when it comes to secrets rather than going on intuition. But that's not the hardest part however until you see the typical Proximity pearl secret (the trend which started from Teo Phil's own Encounter in the Deep). But this time the secret also has a skull forcing any perfect score collector to go through the special secret and it is not your typical dynamite jump secret. Instead it's as mysterious as the real life Bermuda triangle with the mirrored unsynced ropes and sinking elevators. The hardest aspect would be to not go deep enough to sink in water and also manage to catch the rope even when there's only the rope in completely opposite direction as the visual cue. Apart from the special secret, there's another warp area which is pretty tricky with multiple storeys of different cycles of togglepegs accompanied by trigger elevators going down. In fact it is impossible to do the secret by stepping on every peg and instead have to intelligently skip the pegs in a proper way such that the elevators are reachable before they turn off.
While it is moderately difficult in most of the parts, a particular series of steppingstone exercises can be really hard with the amount of enemies like seagulls and cannon rats. Tbh I played worse than my usual self in the normal paths that I even ended up in a death spiral in the above mentioned region. Also the RNG tormented me enough making me to go around in circles especially when cannonballs crack open a crate from elsewhere resulting in an awkward drop of treasure but thankfully Proximity made sure they are mostly safe due to the vast enough decks. However I am glad with how I did in the crucial possible chokepoints and tight catnips while the DJ Gabriel bath ended up things positively for me until which I was a bit raged on my fails and RNG. However apologies in case if you wished to see the entire bossfight but I thought of trying a shortcut (because why not) as the actual setup includes a big round tour across distantly placed tight togglepegs and then climbing up onto the ropes and hitting the button above and falling back down. But also this is my first ever Gabriel bath since I couldn't manage to do it in my 100% PB.
Overall a great level with the perfect size and above average difficulty that can be hard at parts while also being lenient on special powerups but the secrets are the real challenge and Proximity unleashing his ultimate trick under the sleeve in Bermuda triangle super secret.
