The highest waterfall in Yosemite drops 2,425 feet, and at the beginning of October, in most years, it is no more than a trickle. The snow that feeds it is gone, and the cliff stands dark and quiet until the rain and the snow come back.
This is one night on the floor of Yosemite Valley, lying in El Capitan Meadow on the first of October, the park's 136th birthday, from the last light on El Capitan until the first sun on the rim. Fifty-two quiet stops, one every fourteen minutes or so: the granite that cooled miles underground about a hundred million years ago, the glaciers and the old lake that made the valley floor, Half Dome, Bridalveil Fall and the moonbows of spring, the climbers asleep on hanging cots on El Capitan, great gray owls, black bears and mule deer, Saturn at opposition, the giant sequoias of the Mariposa Grove, Tuolumne Meadows, Tioga Pass and the glacial polish of the high country, John Muir's first summer and Theodore Roosevelt's nights in the snow, Glacier Point, the Giant Staircase, Mirror Lake, acorn woodpeckers and the water ouzel, and the slow return of the light.
Nothing here is frightening and nothing is a warning. Yosemite is told as rock, water, light and measurement. Nobody is in danger, nothing goes wrong, and none of it asks anything of you.
Every image is a real photograph, shared openly by photographers, the National Park Service and NASA, and full credits are in the pinned comment. The narration is a synthetic voice, unhurried and soft, over quiet music at a level meant to be slept through.
This relaxing documentary is ideal for:
Falling asleep to calm nature and geology with soft music
Listening to slow, checkable facts at bedtime
Gentle nighttime learning for adults
Relaxing narration for insomnia and restless nights
Drifting off somewhere between moonrise over the granite and the first light
In this video:
How El Capitan and Half Dome were made, and why the valley floor is flat
Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall, moonbows and the February glow of Horsetail Fall
The climbers who sleep on hanging cots high on El Capitan
Giant sequoias, Tuolumne Meadows, the pika and the high country
John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, and the planets over the valley
Whether you came for Yosemite, for national parks, for calm narration at bedtime, or simply for a quiet voice and the sound of a night going by, this is made to be slept through.
