What happens to consciousness when we die? This episode explores what neuroscience, cardiac-arrest research, near-death experiences, philosophy, religion, and archaeology can — and cannot — tell us about the final moments of conscious experience. Can organized brain activity persist after the heart stops? What do people who survive cardiac arrest report? Do near-death experiences tell us something about consciousness itself — or about what happens inside a brain under extreme conditions? Across history, religions and philosophers have offered very different answers. Modern science gives us extraordinary new measurements, but measurement has limits of its own. In this episode, THE DEEP WHY explores the evidence without assuming that any religious, philosophical, or scientific framework has already solved the mystery. Research discussed includes cardiac-arrest and resuscitation studies such as AWARE-II, EEG observations, research into near-death experiences and the dying brain, and archaeological evidence of how ancient humans treated the dead. None of this proves that consciousness continues after death. But it does reveal something stranger: the boundary between measurable brain activity and subjective experience remains one of the deepest unsolved problems we have. THE DEEP WHY explores the biggest questions of existence through science, religion, philosophy, consciousness, history and the universe.
