In 1917 the Danish West Indies were sold to America for $25 million in gold. So who came out ahead, the buyer or the seller?
Denmark had tried to sell St Thomas, St John and St Croix for half a century. An 1867 deal for $7.5 million was never approved by the US Senate, and a 1902 deal for $5 million died on a 32 to 32 tie in Copenhagen. Then the Panama Canal opened, a world war began next door to Denmark, and Washington came back offering five times as much.
This economic history audit follows that $25 million from one Treasury warrant to today: the deep harbour at Charlotte Amalie the buyer wanted, the sugar plantations built on enslaved labour, the Danish vote of 1916 in which the islanders got no binding say, Hoover's "effective poorhouse", the refinery that closed in 2012, and the hurricanes of 2017.
The balance: the gold Denmark was promised would be worth about $5 billion today, about what the US Virgin Islands produce in a year. About 87,000 people live there now, and every 31 March they still mark Transfer Day.
