60 PS1 GAMES EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY
The original PlayStation changed gaming forever.
Released during the 1990s, the PlayStation became one of the most important consoles in video game history, helping popularize 3D gaming, cinematic storytelling, CD-based games, full-motion video, analog controls, survival horror, realistic racing simulations and a huge variety of Japanese and Western game genres.
This video celebrates that incredible library with 60 PS1 games everyone should play.
From legendary blockbusters like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil 2, Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3, Silent Hill and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to lesser-known cult classics such as Koudelka, Countdown Vampires, Omega Boost, G-Darius, Einhänder, Echo Night 2 and Shellshock, this list explores just how diverse the original PlayStation library really was.
The PlayStation era was full of experimentation. Developers were learning how to work with 3D graphics, CD storage, cinematic presentation and new control schemes. Some games became enormous franchises, while others disappeared from the spotlight despite having unique ideas.
This collection brings those experiences together.
Metal Gear Solid, released for PlayStation in 1998, helped redefine stealth action with Solid Snake's infiltration mission, cinematic storytelling, Codec conversations and memorable set pieces. It became one of the games most closely associated with the original PlayStation generation. Sony's own PlayStation history highlights its influence on modern stealth games.
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back arrived in 1997 and refined Naughty Dog's colorful 3D platforming formula. Crash travels through a series of varied levels while collecting crystals, gems and other secrets. The game was originally released on PlayStation and later became part of the history of the Crash Bandicoot franchise.
Gran Turismo 2, released in 1999, pushed PlayStation racing to an enormous scale. The game featured hundreds of cars, numerous tracks, simulation and arcade modes, and two-player split-screen racing. It became one of the defining racing experiences of the console.
Tekken 3 began in arcades in 1997 before reaching PlayStation in 1998. Its huge character roster, fluid 3D fighting and technical combat helped establish it as one of the defining fighting games of the generation. The PlayStation version arrived in Japan in March 1998 and subsequently in other regions.
Final Fantasy VII arrived on PlayStation in 1997 and became one of the most internationally important Japanese RPGs of its generation. It introduced millions of players to Cloud Strife, Aerith, Tifa, Barret and Sephiroth, while its cinematic presentation and 3D environments represented a major change for the series. The game later appeared on Windows, PSP, PS3, PS Vita, mobile platforms, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, released for PlayStation in 1997, combined exploration, platforming, RPG progression and an interconnected castle. Its 2D design stood apart from the growing popularity of 3D games and eventually became one of the most influential examples of the Metroidvania style. It was later released on Saturn and several modern platforms.
Driver, released in 1999, transformed cinematic car-chase ideas into a playable action-driving experience. Players control undercover police officer John Tanner through cities such as Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. The original PlayStation release was followed by Windows, Mac, Game Boy Color and later mobile versions.
Spyro the Dragon arrived in 1998 and introduced players to a colorful 3D platforming world filled with dragons, gems, eggs and secrets. Developed by Insomniac Games, the original PlayStation release later inspired the Spyro: Reignited Trilogy.
Silent Hill, released in 1999, brought psychological survival horror to the PlayStation. Its foggy streets, strange creatures, puzzles and unsettling atmosphere created a very different type of horror experience. The original game was developed by Team Silent and released for PlayStation before later being made available through other PlayStation generations.
