DDPDFK Reignite took a good lot of flak, huh? 25$, and they didn't bundle the old modes. And let's assume they haven't announced any roadmap, okay? Regarding the lack of legacy content, it's both understandable and not.
Let's take a little good look: Reignite ONLY has Arcade, which is Ver 1.5 but added the Stage 6 Beyond stage and with that, an added ending, and Shmup Royale, an evolution of the Mahou Otome Battle Royale mode which is in a nutshell, Twinkle Star Sprites clone with Mario Kart-style direct sabotage and random items. The lack of stage practice on release is horrible, but I'd say it's a good package for its asking price. Compare it to... ESP Ra.De. Ψ. It ONLY has Arcade, Arcade Plus which added new voice acting, some rebalancing, new final boss complete with TLB version and a new playable character. It has no... Arrange modes... But it has a dress up room decoration mode! The price? Almost 5,000 Yen.
Great chunk of the backlash, I'd say, is bad optics. No one complained that ESP Ra.De. is rather thin for an M2 STG standard with its asking price because it's the very first official home port of ESP Ra.De. Makes sense. It does also make some sense to an extent to complain about not including the legacy content of previous ports and released this as a standalone expansion instead considering DFK is very available. But at the same time, why would they when it's already available and make the game more available to new buyers that never bought any DFK port before? Saying "Just have it as a DLC!" is probably to justify saying "Make it Clear River Games-CHEAP!" Just say "25$ is too expensive!". At least the lower price will benefit the new players also!
Still has to be said, it's CAVE's mistake to underestimate the price sensitivity of Steam users. With good reason, of course. Personally? No, I can't hate the package I got. 1 stage worth of content expansion, a novelty PvP mode, concept art bonuses, nice OST arrange too. Worth my money. Then again, I'm a guy that prefers to buy 70$ 16 hours short Character Action Game over 500 hours cozy farm sim game, so think of me as a wasteful video game spender if you want.
The game itself? I love it enough. It's good ol' DFK Ver 1.5 with the new Beyond stage. The only gripe I can give to this new stage is it recycles background assets a bit too much. Probably to cut the production budget and all that and why DFK? Because DFK is explicitly THE time travel game, so patching in art assets from DDP and DOJ is lore-wise 100% fair game. They can sneak in backgrounds from Espgaluda 2 if they want to and lore-wise you can't complain! The stage design itself and the new mid-boss and bosses are up to par to the old CAVE we know and love. I heard it's a crazy scoring ground too, surpassing the scoring value of 2nd loops. If anything, I'd sure would love to see the new CAVE team keep and improve this stage design quality for their new expansions / brand new titles!
It's worth noting that the Stage 6 theme is a really lengthy medley! Stage 5 theme in comparison is a 2 minute loop BGM. Nothing wrong with that at all, but that's a lot of effort for a single stage expansion! I think the BGM is 6 - 7 minutes worth of medley remixes and its new Beyond theme? That is so cool!
Speaking of which, the new Stage 6 is arguably the longest stage of any CAVE game yet, when the boss fight is not in the equation. DFK and DOJ's Stage 5 are around 7 minutes until the main boss. Beyond? 8 minutes. If you see online how crazy the score count and the hit count get, this is one of the factors.
And... that's it. No Replays and Practice on release, what the hell, but the game is as stable as the old PC release, I think. Just by the nature you need to fight Stage 6 makes a Beyond 1-ALL nicely harder to clear than a normal 1-ALL. In short, you can't simply dump resources on Shooty. You need to preserve your resources until you fight Beyond. The great news is she is NOT BOMB IMMUNE. She is not Hibachi-hard too. Don't get hit too much and you're good.
I had great fun with this, but to be very frank I can't recommend you the game unless you're addicted to shmups like me. Not a mere fan. ADDICTED to the point you'll tackle a re-released old shmup that got a new boss or two inserted into it. Its value proposition for casual buyers is poor, not gonna lie. But Stage 6 is very fun, so at least there is that.
This was played on PC. At the time of posting this video, the game doesn't have any console port yet. This is Ver 1.0.3.
