Learn how to use "wollen" and "möchten" in German — two words
that both mean "want," but with completely different tones —
through real conversations with Anna and Ben. Completely in
German. Perfect for A1 and B1 learners.
"Wollen" is direct and can sound demanding, even rude, in the
wrong situation. "Möchten" is the polite version — "would
like" instead of "want." Germans notice this difference
instantly, and using the wrong one at a café or restaurant
can genuinely make you sound impolite.
By the end of this video you will be able to:
✅ Know exactly when "möchten" keeps you polite and safe
✅ Use "wollen" correctly for strong intentions and firm plans
✅ Order food and drinks the polite way, every time
✅ Ask questions with the right level of formality
✅ Sound noticeably more courteous in everyday German
In this video you will learn:
wollen — to want (direct, strong desire)
möchten — would like (polite form)
Ich will — I want (direct)
Ich möchte — I would like (polite)
gern — gladly (softens möchten even more)
Willst du? — Do you want? (casual, with friends)
Möchtest du? — Would you like? (polite, almost universal)
Was willst du damit sagen? — What are you trying to say?
Ich möchte Sie fragen — I would like to ask you (formal)
der Wunsch — the wish
unbedingt — absolutely / no matter what
Ich hätte gern — I would like (even more polite)
sich etwas wünschen — to wish for something
Was möchten Sie bestellen? — What would you like to order?
💬 Was möchtest du unbedingt einmal in deinem Leben machen?
