What do the claims on your favorite cereal box actually mean?
We checked five popular cereals — Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Froot Loops, Honey Nut Cheerios, Raisin Bran Crunch, and Frosted Mini-Wheats — against the rules behind whole grain claims, fiber wording, added sugar, food colors, and upcoming labeling changes.
Some of these rules are surprisingly specific. A whole grain claim can depend on ingredient order and fortification. “Good source of fiber” and “high fiber” sit on different regulatory thresholds. And the added-sugar limit used in school nutrition programs doesn't apply to the same cereal sitting on a regular grocery shelf.
We also look at the changing timeline for several synthetic food dyes and what proposed labeling changes could mean for the information printed on cereal boxes.
This isn't about telling you which cereal to buy. It's about understanding what the label actually tells you — and what you should look for the next time you're standing in the cereal aisle.
Check the front. Flip the box over. Then read the first ingredient.
Which of these five cereals is in your kitchen right now?
