Ravikiran is an acclaimed Carnatic slide-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and innovator widely celebrated as a child prodigy. The grandson of Gottuvadhyam master Narayana Iyengar and son of Chitravina Narasimhan, Ravikiran stunned the music world at age two during a 1969 presentation at the Madras Music Academy, where he identified hundreds of ragas and talas on command—prompting sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar to remark, "If you don't believe in God, just look at Ravikiran." After starting as a vocal soloist at age five, he transitioned at age ten to master the chitravina (a fretless 21-stringed slide lute), which he popularized globally alongside his modern creation, the Navachitravina. Beyond his instrumental virtuosity, including a legendary non-stop 24-hour marathon recital in 1985, he pioneered Melharmony—a global concept fusing the intricate melodic nuances of Eastern ragas with Western harmonic frameworks. A prolific composer of over 800 classical works, he holds the distinction of composing in all 35 Carnatic talas and setting all 1,330 verses of the ancient Tirukkural to music. For his immense contributions to Indian classical music and global education, he was awarded the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi by the Music Academy, Chennai, in 2017.
