The suspension is tuned to a medium level to ensure a good compromise between comfort and dynamic handling. As is typical of these front-wheel-drive Audis, if you push the limits, it understeers but reacts predictably. -Confort: 7,5/10 The A4, like any sedan, is generally a comfortable car and a good travel companion, although it's hampered by limited rear space and a suspension that feels dry absorbing road imperfections. The seats are somewhat firm compared to those of other similar sedans. -Engine performance: 8,5/10 It's a lively engine that moves a 1,500 kg body like this A4 well, with a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 228 km/h, more than sufficient performance. The torque isn't too high for a turbo engine, so we won't find the powerful low end of a modern TSI. Below 3000 rpm it's somewhat sluggish; between 3000 and 5000 rpm is the ideal operating range for daily use, and between 5000 and 6000 rpm it reveals its full power. -Fuel consuption: 6,5/10 Although this 1.8T was efficient in its day, more so than larger naturally aspirated engines of similar power, we can't say its fuel consumption is low. With relaxed everyday driving, fuel consumption will hover around 9.0 l/100 km, but it's very easy to break the 10 l/100 km barrier if you're a bit of a speedy type. -Build quality: 9,0/10 The build quality of this A4 is outstanding. Everything is assembled with quality, the materials are good (soft plastics, aluminum inserts, the Audi buttons' click...), and there's hardly any looseness after almost 20 years. The only drawback is that the climate control and light controls have a tendency to peel off their patterns, or some of the upholstery comes loose. -Price/what you get ratio: 8,0/10 If you have around 5,000 euros and want a well-made car with a good trunk, and a gasoline engine that offers a good balance between power and reliability (these 1.8Ts, when well maintained, are very durable), this is a very interesting option. However, if you cover a lot of miles per year, I'd opt for a 1.9 TDI or 2.0 TDI.
