Every headline says this is the worst time ever to buy a house in America. But is it? Instead of going by feelings, we ran the numbers across 50 years of housing affordability. We compare the monthly mortgage payment as a percentage of median household income in three eras: 🏠 October 1981: 18.45% rates, payment takes about 55% of income 🏠 2006 (bubble peak): 6.4% rates, payment takes about 31% of income 🏠 Today: about 6.9% rates, payment takes about 32% of income In this video: Why raw home prices can’t be compared across decades How the housing affordability index actually works Why 1981 was measurably harder than today Why 2021’s 3% rates were the exception, not the norm The lock-in effect and why low inventory makes today hard in a different way 3 things to check before reacting to any “worst time ever” headline The honest answer isn’t “today is fine” and it isn’t “today is the worst ever.” It’s that today is hard for a different, more structural reason. 💬 Where do you think today actually ranks?
