On January 27, 1967, Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were sealed inside their Apollo command module on Pad 34 for a routine test. There was no fuel in the rocket. Nobody thought it was dangerous. At 6:31 p.m., a voice on the radio said one word: fire. In a cabin full of pure oxygen, the fire spread in seconds, and the hatch took more than five minutes to open. Five days earlier, Grissom had picked a lemon from his backyard tree to hang on the spacecraft. This is the story of the warnings that came before the fire: the oxygen fires nobody connected, the Phillips report kept inside NASA, the inspector who was fired, and the flight director who told his team they would be "tough and competent" from that day on. Told through original NASA film, newsreels, the Apollo 204 Review Board and the Senate record.
