Tucked away in central Baoding, The Anhui Troop Agency is a hidden historical gem from the late Qing Dynasty. Built in 1888 by Viceroy Li Hongzhang, it served as both a memorial shrine for fallen soldiers and a military office. What makes this site unique is its architectural fusion: elegant, whitewashed Huizhou-style horse-head walls from southern China blend seamlessly with sturdy northern courtyard elements, creating a rare and captivating space that reflects both war and remembrance.
The complex's crowning jewel is its Grand Opera Stage, the largest surviving indoor Qing Dynasty opera stage in China. Its most remarkable feature is the spiral zaojing ceiling dome, composed of nearly 4,000 interlocking wooden brackets. This intricate design is not just beautiful—it is a brilliant acoustic device that projects sound naturally without amplification. Now restored as part of the China Ancient Opera House Museum, this silent stage still whispers echoes of a glorious theatrical past.
