Historical records attribute its construction to Sultan Muhammad Adil Shah in the mid-17th century, reportedly in memory of his queen Jahan Begum. The construction is associated with the supervision of the famous Adil Shahi general Afzal Khan. Water from Begum Talab passed through a series of sedimentation tanks, where mud and impurities settled naturally before the clean water flowed through underground clay pipelines and water towers (Gunj) to supply the royal city, including the Asar Mahal and surrounding settlements.
