Gracious in Defeat - Nev Clay

Another one from this little series, filmed at the Bridge Hotel, Castle Garth, Newcastle on 1st Oct 2025 by Jason and Oliver Thompson - the place where I did my first ever solo gig, supporting local band Spinach in the basement venue while the other members of the band I was in went to see Monster Magnet at the Riverside. Again, apologies for the sub-par voice caused by the arrival or departure of some autumnal bronchial organism. One of just a few songs of mine about bars and alcohol, this one's the only song I play in CGDEGC. I'll release a decent version of this at some point... Yet again, I'd like to draw your attention to these lovely stained glass windows, almost each one unique - an extravagant project for a Victorian/Edwardian boozer. The offy she works in just can't compete with the paper shop next door. They sell drink and tabs and lottery tickets, what would anyone come in here for? With her silk scarf an her tracksuit, and Ugg Boots on her feet, she fills the shelves with biscuits and she's gracious in defeat. Her boyfriend drives a silver mondeo with big speakers in the back. With his temper, he's a prime candidate for a stroke or a heat attack. And she nags him about his smoking and he rubbish that he eats, but he never listens to a word and she's gracious in defeat. The lighthouse keeper's daughter rows out on the dark and stormy waves, beneath which lies the ship and its crew, not a single soul left to be saved. She decides to keep on rowing, though the rain has turned to sleet. If you can't beat them, join them and be gracious in defeat. I fell in love with every barmaid that ever pulled me a pint. but what's that worth when you go home alone at the end of the night... and you write her a little love song with a melody simple and sweet. and that's your consolation.
