His normally fearless dog refused to enter the backyard after dark. Unnatural howls echoed from the woods. Enormous canine tracks appeared near the house, deer carcasses turned up nearby, and eventually something began coming closer. Then he saw it. Standing nearly seven feet tall beneath a motion light was a massive, dark-haired creature with the head of a canine, long arms, strangely shaped legs, and the ability to move effortlessly on both two legs and four. But the creature may not have been the strangest part of the story. A reclusive neighbor named Ray seemed to know something about the sightings. He asked unusual questions about “dogs,” warned that unfamiliar animals should be left alone, and appeared increasingly disturbed as the encounters escalated. Then, only days after the creature’s final appearance, Ray died in an ordinary logging accident. The howls stopped. The tracks disappeared. The creature never returned. Was Ray simply a strange neighbor who knew more than he admitted? Had he somehow befriended the creature living in the woods? Or was there another possibility entirely?
