Standing on a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet, it has become an enduring symbol of Scotland's beauty and history. But behind the postcard-perfect scenery lies a far darker past. Originally founded in the 13th century, Eilean Donan played a crucial role in defending the western Highlands against Norse invasions and later became a stronghold of the powerful Clan Mackenzie. The castle found itself at the center of clan conflicts, political upheaval, and the turbulent Jacobite era. Its darkest chapter came in 1719, when Spanish soldiers occupied the fortress in support of a Jacobite uprising against the British Crown. In response, Royal Navy warships bombarded the castle, reducing much of it to ruins.
