Sandra Birchmore's death investigation began with an interview the lead trooper couldn't replay. Massachusetts State Police Trooper Matthew Dunne testified that he and a supervisor questioned Matthew Farwell in a school parking lot without recording the conversation or taking notes. Dunne said the choice was tactical: they wanted Farwell to talk rather than end the interview and request counsel.
Federal prosecutors pressed Dunne about what happened next. He testified that investigators did not question Farwell's Stoughton Police Department coworkers after that meeting. He also did not talk to Birchmore's neighbors or attend her autopsy. Dunne said he did not initially classify her death as suspicious because he saw no signs of a struggle. Later, he told jurors Farwell had not been truthful about when the relationship began or how often the two met.
The prosecution alleges Farwell killed Birchmore and staged her death to conceal a relationship that began while she was a teenager. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. His defense maintains that Sandra took her own life and points to her mental-health history and the original investigators' observations.
Surveillance evidence presented at trial showed Farwell entering Birchmore's building wearing a mask. Prosecutors say he left before going to the hospital, where his wife later gave birth. They argue the timeline matters; the defense disputes the killing allegation.
Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines the reported behavior and the limitations of drawing psychological conclusions from surveillance footage. Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta considers what an undocumented interview means once a federal jury must evaluate competing accounts.
The unresolved question is how much confidence jurors can place in an investigation whose own lead witness acknowledged so many missing steps.
