The Tide Is Rising | Dr. Kevin R. Johnson | Psalm 68:31 | The Abyssinian Baptist Church ___________________________________________________________________________________ God is raising up a new generation of people of color, and no wall can hold back what God has set in motion. On a historic Sunday at The Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, welcoming His Imperial Highness Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie Haile Selassie and a distinguished delegation, Dr. Kevin R. Johnson preaches from Psalm 68:31: "Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God." In 1809, Abyssinian's founders quoted this same verse when they asked to form their own church, and they took the ancient name of Ethiopia as their own. More than two hundred years later, Dr. Johnson traces how the powers of this world feared the rising of people of color, how they tried to hold back the tide through slavery, colonialism, and division, and why the tide is turning now. This is not a flood to destroy but a tide to restore, rising toward God.
