Dr. Madalyn McKnight started journaling because of Moesha. That habit became a doctorate. That doctorate led to Project Healthvocate, a nonprofit working to close the gap between how doctors talk and how the rest of us actually communicate.
The stat she leads with: 9 out of 10 Americans can't understand basic health information. And only 18% of new doctors received culturally competent training last year. That's not a patient problem. That's a system problem.
In this conversation, Dr. Madalyn talks about how she built a nonprofit, a podcast, a newsletter, and a published journal — all aimed at making health information legible to the people who need it most. We also get into Black maternal health outcomes in Mississippi, what it means to train providers in cultural competency (not just patients in self-advocacy), and the book she wrote to help people get better at being better.
