Higashiobash, located in Higashinari Ward, Osaka City, was historically part of an area known as Obashi-ken (comprising the villages of Obashi, Kino, Ikaino, and Oka). The Kudara River flowed to the east, spanned by the Ikaitsu Bridge, and the area is said to have seen heavy traffic from travelers heading toward the Kawachi and Nara regions. Because large flocks of cranes would fly in every year, the area eventually came to be known as Tsuruhashi ("Crane Bridge"). The district enjoys excellent transportation access, served by the Osaka Loop Line (opened in 1895) to the west, the Kintetsu Line (opened in 1914) to the south, and the subway system. To the north lies the 3,000-tsubo Higashiobash Park, famous for its cherry blossom viewing, Bon Odori dance festivals, and sumo ring.
