With respect to the pioneers: #alshanfarā #ornettecoleman #dickdale #brianjones #area #demetriostratos
This song is inspired by al-Shanfarā, a poet who lived in the Arabian Peninsula around the 7th century.
Al-Shanfarā is one of the most famous representatives of the ṣaʿālīk, the outlaw poets who lived on the margins of Arab society.
In his poetry, a person who leaves the community comes to accept the desert and the wilderness as his own place.
“I leave the community by my own choice, and choose the wilderness.”
I reimagined this spirit through the lens of contemporary Moroccan Darija rap.
The Japanese title follows the example of Area and Demetrio Stratos, whose work first led me to discover al-Shanfarā.
In Moroccan Darija:
Weld L-Khla
“Son of the Wilderness.”
The music also incorporates the repetitive rhythms and collective call-and-response found in Moroccan Gnawa and Issawa traditions.
Weld L-Khla
