The Cast of the Classics: Every Face, Every Fate.
The man who gave HAL its voice recorded every line in about a day and a half, and he never sat down to watch the finished film. Fifty-eight years have passed since 2001: A Space Odyssey opened in American cinemas in April of nineteen sixty-eight. Stanley Kubrick produced and directed it for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, wrote it with Arthur C. Clarke, and shot it on the stages of MGM-British Studios at Borehamwood and Shepperton Studios outside London. The story runs from a tribe of man-apes at the dawn of humanity to a mysterious black monolith on the Moon, and then to two astronauts flying to Jupiter with a computer that turns against them. Looking back from October of two thousand twenty-six, the cast turns out to be a gathering of stage actors, a former child star, a mime and the director's own daughter, and their lives went in directions no script predicted.
Four of the people in this video are still living as of October two thousand twenty-six. Keir Atwood Dullea, known as Keir Dullea, played the mission commander Dave Bowman and is ninety. John Gary Yurosek, who works under the name Gary Lockwood, played the astronaut Frank Poole and is eighty-nine. Daniel Richter, the mime who played Moonwatcher, leader of the man-apes, is eighty-seven. Vivian Vanessa Kubrick, the director's daughter, appeared uncredited as Doctor Floyd's little girl, Squirt, on the videophone and is sixty-six.
Six have died. Leonard Rossiter played the Russian scientist Smyslov and died in October of nineteen eighty-four, aged fifty-seven. Robert Rutherford Beatty, credited as Robert Beatty, played Doctor Halvorsen of the Clavius moon base and died in March of nineteen ninety-two, aged eighty-two. William Sylvester played Doctor Heywood Floyd and died in January of nineteen ninety-five, aged seventy-two. Margaret Maud Tyzack, known as Margaret Tyzack, played the Soviet scientist Elena and died in June of two thousand eleven, aged seventy-nine. Alma Mabel Conner, the former child star known as Ann Gillis, played Frank Poole's mother and died in January of two thousand eighteen, aged ninety. Douglas James Rain, known as Douglas Rain, gave HAL nine thousand its voice and died in November of two thousand eighteen, aged ninety.
The ages, dates and resting places in this video were checked against obituaries in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Associated Press, The Hollywood Reporter, The Independent and United Press International, the Encyclopedia of Arkansas and The Canadian Encyclopedia, interviews the cast gave themselves, and cemetery records, and they are current to October of two thousand twenty-six. Where a family has kept a resting place private, the video says so. The narration in this video was voiced with an artificial intelligence voice.
The two astronauts Kubrick sent toward Jupiter are both still here at ninety and eighty-nine, while the man who voiced the computer that tried to kill them died in two thousand eighteen. Kubrick spent years making machines look permanent, and his own astronauts outlasted the voice of the machine.
