One Sunday in May, at the sink, Noor learned that her husband had been dipping into his savings since January. Their accounts were separate, so nothing looked wrong. Noor and Raf ask what she should have said, and whether separate accounts are really the problem. They argue both sides, swap halfway, and then test the idea on a couple with very different pay.
You'll hear how to open a money conversation without blame. The key expressions are “Can we check the split still fits? Nothing's wrong”, “Could we each pay the same share of our pay?”, “If either of us ever has a bad few months, what should we do?” and “Could we start a small rainy-day fund?”. Along the way you'll pick up “standing order”, “take-home pay”, “out of pocket”, “do the maths” and “in proportion to”, plus the difference between “could we” and “should we”.
Try the short test, say your answer aloud, and tell us in the comments which opening you would really use.
