It was originally intended as a meditation for Passiontide, and focuses on sacrificial love: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Especially resonant during World War I, and written in 1912, just before its outbreak, Ireland’s work became a tribute to those who gave their lives in service, resonating with a wider national mood.
