Do you ever wonder why you are still sad — and quietly worry that you should have moved on by now?
In this Catholic reflection, discover what St. Thomas Aquinas taught about sorrow, grief, emotional pain, and the practical ways a human soul can carry loss without being crushed by it.
Aquinas did not treat sadness as a spiritual failure. He understood that sorrow can be the natural response of a person who recognized and loved something genuinely good — and then experienced its loss.
He also identified five remarkably practical remedies for sorrow: legitimate pleasure, tears, the compassion of a friend, contemplation of truth, and bodily rest.
You are allowed to grieve.
You are allowed to receive something good while you are grieving.
You are allowed to cry.
You are allowed to let someone sit beside you.
You are allowed to rest.
Faith does not require you to stop feeling.
It gives you somewhere to stand while you feel what is real.
