The site dates back to the 10th to 14th centuries CE and is historically associated with the Chutia Kingdom. Unlike most ancient temples in Northeast India that were constructed out of brick, Malinithan is uniquely built entirely out of granite stones. Systematic excavations conducted between 1968 and 1971 unearthed beautifully carved temple platforms, panels, and magnificent granite sculptures of Hindu deities such as Indra on Airavata, Surya, Ganesha, and a primary headless female sculpture believed to represent Goddess Durga (worshipped locally as Pupane or Kechai-Khaiti).The site is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. According to local legend, after Lord Krishna eloped with Rukmini from Bhismaknagar, they stopped at this location on their way to Dwarka. They were warmly welcomed by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, who presented them with exquisite garlands made of flowers from her orchard. Fascinated by the fragrance and beauty of the flowers, Krishna addressed Parvati as Sucharu Malini (meaning "a lady who strings garlands beautifully"). From the word Malini, the sacred place came to be known as Malinithan. Today, it stands as a beautifully renovated spiritual and cultural tourism hub that attracts thousands of pilgrims and history enthusiasts every year.
