I pointed to one student (Omar) and asked: "Who is this?" The student answered: "He is Omar." Then I pointed to another student (Khalid) and asked: "Who is this?" He answered: "He is Khalid." Then I pointed to Omar and Khalid together and asked: "Who are they?" He answered: "They are Omar and Khalid." Then I pointed to three students (Omar, Khalid, Hussein) and asked: "Who are they?" He answered: "They are Omar, Khalid and Hussein." *I repeated the same process with females:* Fatema → She is Fatema. Sara → She is Sara. Fatema and Sara → They are Fatema and Sara. Fatema, Sara and Layla → They are Fatema, Sara and Layla. *Then I repeated the same process with non-human things:* One pen → It is a pen. Two pens → They are pens. Three pens → They are pens. *Then I mixed males and females:* Omar and Fatema → They are Omar and Fatema. Omar and his dog Bob → They are Omar and Bob. Fatema and her cat Lucy → They are Fatema and Lucy. Omar, Bob, Fatema and Lucy → They are Omar, Bob, Fatema and Lucy. *The Golden Rule:* We use "They" when we talk about: Two or more males. Two or more females. Two or more non-human things. A mix of males and females. A mix of humans and animals or objects. *In short:* "They" is used for any two or more elements, regardless of type or gender.
