The killer is toxoplasmosis — a parasite so common that most house cats carry it without ever getting sick. Pallas's cats have zero natural immunity to it. They evolved in environments so cold that bacteria barely survive. In captivity, surrounded by parasites their immune systems have never encountered, they have no defense. That's where this story ends up. Here's where it starts. In 1776, a German naturalist looked at one of the oldest, most genetically isolated cat lineages on Earth and decided it was someone's escaped pet. Then he changed his mind and called it the ancestor of the Persian breed. Charles Darwin cited the theory. Taxonomists argued about it for a century. A comparative anatomist ran the most rigorous skull analysis of his era and still couldn't separate it from the domestic lineage. And when geneticists finally sequenced the genome — in 2023 — they found a lineage that diverged from its nearest relatives between 4.8 and 8.55 million years ago. For context, the entire genus Homo is roughly two to three million years old. This animal's lineage predates ours by millions of years. And for 250 of those years, science kept getting it wrong. The Pallas's cat has been waiting for us to see it clearly for a quarter of a millennium.
