Kelly Country: The Historic Townships of North East Victoria & Riverina NSW 🇦🇺

Glenrowan Victoria was named after farmers James and George Rowan who ran farms in the area between 1846 and 1858. The township was settled in the late 1860s, the Post Office opening on 22 February 1870. It is famous for the bushranger Ned Kelly, who made his last stand and was eventually captured there in 1880 after a siege and shootout with police. The local railway station opened in 1874 and closed to passengers in 1981 Euroa, Victoria is a town in the Shire of Strathbogie. The Euroa Post Office opened on 1 January 1854 in the old town, as the township was settled. The National Bank in Euroa was robbed by Ned Kelly in 1878. Much of the region's wealth once came from sheep but now it comes from horse studs. Avenel was the hometown of Ned Kelly in his younger years, where he saved a boy from drowning in the local Hughes Creek. Around 15 kilometres from Glenrowan is the township of Greta, where Ned lived with his family on Fifteen Mile Creek from the age of 12 after his father died. In the region the town of Benalla is home to King’s bootmaker shop, which Ned Kelly sought refuge in while running from the police after being arrested for drunkenness. Across the road is the old courthouse where Ned appeared immediately after the incident. (4.44 - 5.16) The town of Jerilderie was raided by Ned Kelly and his gang between 6 February and 10 February 1879 during which the then Bank of Jerilderie was robbed and residents taken hostage.
