*Pastor Zhao Tian’en was one of the representative figures of the modern Chinese church.* Born in China as the son of a pastor, he spent his childhood in Japan and the United States, growing up alongside the children of foreign missionaries. From his youth, God was already cultivating in him a passion for missions and the heart of a shepherd.
After graduating from Westminster Theological Seminary, he responded to God’s call and courageously returned to a China that was both familiar and unfamiliar to him. He was convinced that God had called him to serve the Chinese world, especially mainland China.
For many years, he traveled extensively and conducted research, founded the China Gospel Fellowship, and published numerous writings, helping Christians overseas understand the revival taking place in the Chinese church. He had a deep concern for the house churches and spoke boldly on behalf of believers who suffered persecution. He longed for greater freedom in Taiwan, among Chinese communities around the world, and on the mainland—freedom in which the vulnerable would be treated with dignity and children would have the freedom to choose their own faith.
He articulated the vision of the *“Three Transformations”**: **the evangelization of China, the kingdomization of the church, and the Christianization of culture.* This vision combined prophetic insight, theological analysis, and evangelical passion.
He studied and prayed simultaneously, offering forward-looking insights and advancing ministries in literature, children’s ministry, discipleship, and theological education. He envisioned developing textbooks specifically suited to mainland China as well as distance-learning programs, while mobilizing intellectuals and evangelists to participate in the Great Commission.
He trained a new generation of educated young people, cared for local churches and persecuted pastors, and laid a foundation for the unity and missionary calling of the Chinese church. Even in the face of threats from the authorities, he remained faithful to his calling.
*The candle burned too quickly.* He was taken home by the Lord at a relatively young age, yet he continues to speak. Many remember him with the conviction that, had he still been with us, the Chinese church would be even stronger today.
He did not merely study history; *he participated in shaping it.* His enduring hope was that the Chinese church would move toward **global missions**, becoming a blessing and a missionary force to the nations.
