1 Timothy 3:14–16, Paul reminds the church of what it truly is: the household of God, the church of the living God, and a pillar and buttress of the truth. The church is not merely a building, an event, or an organization. It is a people redeemed by Christ and called to display and defend the truth of the gospel. Because the church belongs to God, we do not get to redefine it according to culture, preference, or convenience. Christ is the head of His church, His Word governs His church, and His people are called to live in a way that reflects His holiness and truth. At the center of the church is Jesus Christ. The mystery of godliness is not ultimately a system or philosophy, but the person and work of Christ. He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, and taken up in glory. The church therefore exists to make much of Christ. We gather around His Word, proclaim His gospel, serve His people, and stand firmly for the truth because Jesus is worthy.
