Walking around Hamina town centre. Hamina is located approximately 145 km (90 mi) east of the country's capital Helsinki, in the Kymenlaakso region, and formerly the province of Southern Finland. The municipality's population is 19,305 (as of 30 June 2025). Hamina, fortress city, is the oldest town in Southeast Finland and is built on a rare circular town plan. In the middle of the circle stands the Town Hall, from which the streets of the old town and their colorful houses, museums, churches, boutiques, and cafés intersect. The walk takes place the Fortress Path that has fortified wall ruins of the early 19th century, built to protect the city in all directions.
