The Anglo Indian Poverty Nobody Spoke About (From Someone Who Lived It)

This is the continuation of The Anglo Indian Story Nobody Told You. When people picture Anglo-Indian life, they often remember railway colonies, Christmas dances, good schools, music and wonderful food. Those memories are real—but they are not the whole story. Many Anglo-Indian families also struggled with low wages, school fees, insecure employment, crowded housing and the fear that one unexpected expense could place the entire family in difficulty. My own family was not wealthy either. My father worked for Electric Supply in Agra, but we still struggled and had to make every rupee stretch. I saw the worry my parents carried about our future. In this video, I look at why poverty was often hidden behind pride and respectability, why poorer families were sometimes unable to migrate, the women who kept households financially afloat, and the churches and organisations that helped families survive. Not every Anglo-Indian family was poor—but this was a real part of our history, and it deserves to be remembered.
