Nomadic Cave Life in Iran: A Nomadic Couple’s Struggle to Survive and Bake Traditional Bread on a Pan
Experience the reality of nomadic cave life in Iran’s Zagros Mountains as Tahmures and Roya work together to improve their natural cave home, bake traditional bread over an open fire, and build a stronger stone shelter to protect their family from the harsh mountain cold.
🏔️ A New Day in a Natural Mountain Cave
The day begins as the family wakes up inside their cave home in the rugged Zagros Mountains. Tahmures enters a narrow, rocky passage deep inside the cave to collect fresh spring water. With a low ceiling, uneven rocks, and limited space to move, collecting water is a challenging part of everyday cave life.
🔥 Traditional Bread Baking and Fire Tea
After collecting water, the family lights a fire and prepares breakfast. Roya kneads the dough by hand and bakes fresh traditional bread on a pan over the open flames. Tahmures prepares tea by the fire, bringing warmth and comfort to their simple mountain home. These traditional routines are an essential part of their daily life.
🪨 Building and Strengthening a Stone Shelter
One of the main tasks in this episode is improving the cave shelter before the cold weather arrives. Tahmures gathers stones from around the cave and uses a heavy sledgehammer to break larger rocks into smaller pieces. He carefully places the stones to build and strengthen the walls.
Roya works alongside him, passing stones as he arranges them. Together, they fill the gaps between the larger rocks with smaller stones and gravel, making the dry-stone wall more compact. Every stone is placed with care as they gradually improve their shelter against cold temperatures and mountain winds.
🧹 Cleaning and Organizing the Cave
While the stonework continues, Roya sweeps the cave floor, clears away dirt and scattered stones, organizes the living area, and washes the dishes. Keeping the cave clean and orderly makes their limited living space more comfortable for everyday family life.
❤️ Family Life and Daily Responsibilities
Tahmures and Roya care for Diana and their baby son, Samiyar, while balancing the demanding work of cave restoration. They also look after their chickens and prepare food after a long day. Gathering around the fire for a family meal brings a moment of happiness and warmth to life in the remote mountains.
