"A tremendous ovation": Samuel Coleridge-Taylor at the Brighton Dome

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, the son of a Sierra Leonean father and English mother, was one of the most popular British composers of the early twentieth century. He caused a sensation when he conducted pieces from his celebrated Hiawatha cantatas at the Brighton Dome in 1908. In this short film – featuring original artwork by The Mixed Museum's Artist in Residence ‪@isabellkinga‬ – we tell the little-known story of his visit. We also share new research findings on the importance of his work at the venue throughout the first half of the twentieth century and beyond.
