Antwerp, a small city in Belgium popularly known as Diamond Capital of the World. It is about fifty kilometers away from Brussels, the capital of Belgium, which is famous as the chocolate capital. Antwerp is the world's largest and most reliable diamond center and has grown into a diamond capital or diamond empire for the past five centuries. As a result of craftsmanship, technology, traditions and creativity in diamond manufacturing, it attracts millions of tourists and diamond lovers every year.
Do you know how big the diamond market here? About 86% of the world's total rough diamonds, 50% of polished diamonds and 40% of industrial diamonds are sold and bought here. The Antwerp Diamond District or Diamond Quarter covers an area of one square mile and is the world's largest diamond center with a turnover of $54 billion a year. There are artisans who are skilled in diamond cutting and polishing work.
Antwerp's diamond industry has a history of five centuries. Its foundations were laid at the end of the fifteenth century when Europe opened sea routs for trade with the rest of the world. Being on the banks of the Scheldt River, which has direct connections with the Northern Ocean, it grew into an important trading center. Earlier, rough diamonds were brought from India and elsewhere, polished and sold across Europe. Over time it developed into a major diamond center.
The modern diamond cutting method was discovered by a resident of the Belgian port city of Bruges. When port activities in Bruges declined, the global import of diamonds shifted to Antwerp and Antwerp grew into a diamond city. Within a few years, while London and Amsterdam diamond merchants gained dominance, Antwerp's diamond industry declined significantly. When Belgium liberalized its economic policies in the early nineteenth century, Antwerp replaced Amsterdam as the main Diamond business center.
Criteria for determining the quality of a polished diamond and its value – 4 C’s
1. First C - Carrot. It refers to the weight of the diamond.
2. The second C means colour. Colourless diamonds are the most valuable diamonds. Naturally occurring "fancy diamonds" with clear colours are considered even more valuable. But man-made coloured diamonds are less expensive.
3. The third C is clarity. Clarity refers to the purity of a diamond.
4. The fourth C is cut. It refers to the method of cutting the diamond. In this regard the finishing of a diamond plays a crucial role in its price.
Although Antwerp is known for the best quality diamonds, it is better to get a certificate while buying a diamond to avoid being cheated. Ask for an HRD Antwerp, GIA (Gemological Institute of America (GIA)) or IGI certificate for all purchases of diamonds of 1 carat or more.
Founded in 1973, Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC) is one of the most famous private companies in the world.
