Jonathan Jurecki is a health educator, researcher, and content creator known for breaking down the relationship between sunlight, circadian biology, mitochondrial health, and the modern environment.
In this conversation, we went deep into something most of us have been taught to fear: the sun.
We talked about heliotherapy, the historical medical practice of using sunlight as therapy, including its use in tuberculosis treatment before modern antibiotics. We discussed why hospitals and sanatoriums were once designed around access to fresh air and sunlight, and what we may have forgotten as medicine evolved.
Jonathan and I also get into sunscreen, circadian rhythm, artificial light, spending too much time indoors, and the biological relationship between light and human health.
We discuss:
• Heliotherapy and the history of sun-based treatment
• Tuberculosis and the sanatorium movement
• How sunlight was historically used in medicine
• Circadian rhythm and why light exposure matters throughout the day
• Morning, midday, and evening sunlight
• Sunscreen and our modern relationship with the sun
• Artificial light and indoor living
• Vitamin D and sunlight
• Mitochondrial health
• What modern lifestyles may be doing to our biology
• How to rethink our relationship with natural light
Whether you agree with everything discussed or not, this conversation is an interesting look at the history of sunlight in medicine and the growing conversation around light, environment, and human health.
Jonathan is a wealth of knowledge, and this was one of those interviews where it was almost impossible to cut his answers into short clips without losing the context behind them.
