A folding table at the end of a driveway, October of 1985, with a platter of popcorn balls wrapped in wax paper and still a little sticky, a jug of cider beside it, and a porch light burning behind all of it. That street ran on trust for one night a year, and every kid in the neighborhood knew the rules without anyone writing them down.
The last one on the list is the one that took the rest of the night down with it.
In this video:
✓ Burning leaves at the curb and the open burn bans that ended it
✓ Real candles in the pumpkin and the rules that replaced them
✓ Halloween at school, from baked cupcakes to the costume parade
✓ Trick or treat doors, hours and the neighbor who waved kids in
✓ Mischief night pranks, mailboxes and the charges that follow now
✓ Carnival prizes, ponies and the hayride on the trailer
✓ Cider jugs, bake sales and the school food rules
✓ Garage haunted houses and the codes that govern them now
The porch light is the piece of all this that people would bring back first. Put the whole list together and it reads like a street that trusted itself a little further than good sense allowed, and then traded that trust for rules and safer versions of the same night.
Which one is still standing where you lived? The hay wagon, or the cider, or the kitchen you got waved into?
The memories did not move.
