This ancient bedrock has been deeply weathered over hundreds of millions of years, creating the distinctive landscape you'll ride and walk through today. The region features imposing granite peaks rising through the forest, including Mount Frankland (411m) with its spectacular granite outcrop. These granite domes and outcrops punctuate the landscape, creating diverse habitats from dense forest valleys to exposed heathland summits. The famous karri loam soils that support these giant forests are uniquely deep, reaching several metres in thickness, created primarily from millennia of accumulated bark shed by the forest giants. This nutrient-cycling process, combined with the region's high rainfall (900-1300mm annually), supports one of the world's most spectacular temperate forests. 🌿 GONDWANAN RELICS: THE TINGLE TREES The ancient tingle trees trace their origins back 65 million years to the supercontinent Gondwana—when Australia was joined with Africa, India, Antarctica, and South America. These are living relics of a prehistoric world, found nowhere else on Earth except within approximately 6,000 hectares surrounding Walpole. Three species of tingle trees exist here: Red Tingle (Eucalyptus jacksonii) – the most massive eucalypts in the world, with buttressed trunks up to 24m in circumference. The karri forests alone support around 2,000 plant species and 150 bird species. Look out for mainland quokkas, western grey kangaroos, western rosellas, and the tiny splendid fairy-wren. During winter months (July-October), spot migrating Southern Right and Humpback whales from coastal lookouts. WHEN TO VISIT Spring (August-November) for wildflowers; autumn and winter for comfortable riding temperatures. Summer can be hot with fire danger—check conditions before visiting.
