The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden (commonly known as the Botanical Garden of Kolkata or Shibpur Botanical Garden) is one of the oldest and largest botanical reserves in Asia. Located in Shibpur, Howrah, along the west bank of the Hooghly River, it spans over 270 acres (109 hectares).
Key Highlights & Attractions
The Great Banyan Tree: The garden's most famous landmark, estimated to be over 250 years old. Its massive canopy covers over 3.5 acres, supported by thousands of prop roots, giving it the appearance of a mini forest rather than a single tree.
Rich Plant Biodiversity: Maintained by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), the garden houses over 12,000 living plant specimens, including rare species of orchids, palms, bamboos, cacti, and giant Amazonian water lilies.
Historical Significance: Established in 1787 by Lieutenant Colonel Robert Kyd of the East India Company, it played a pivotal role in introducing commercial crops like tea (which led to Assam and Darjeeling tea cultivation) and mahogany to India.
Central National Herbarium: It hosts an extensive herbarium with over 2.5 million dried plant specimens, serving as a major hub for botanical research globally.
