Carmen Acevedo Butcher explores Christian mysticism, healing religious trauma, and finding God in everyday life. Drawing on The Cloud of Unknowing and Brother Lawrence’s Practice of the Presence, she shares a gentle approach to meditation, self-compassion, and contemplative prayer. In this conversation with Rick Archer, Carmen describes growing up with family violence and a fear-based religious environment, finding refuge in nature, and gradually reclaiming her own voice and agency. She explains how therapy, friendship, sacred reading, and translating the mystics have supported her ongoing healing. An award-winning translator, author, poet, and teacher, Carmen is core faculty and Dean at the Center for Action and Contemplation. Her translations bring the Christian contemplative tradition into accessible, everyday language. Topics include: • Letting go of perfectionism and becoming less reactive • Meeting distracting thoughts with gentleness in Centering Prayer • Practicing Lectio Divina through reading, reflection, prayer, and rest • How dyslexia shaped Carmen’s relationship with sacred reading • Brother Lawrence’s practice of presence during ordinary tasks • The Gospel of Thomas, selfhood, and reclaiming inner authority • Living with unanswered questions about God and suffering • Bringing contemplation into teaching, relationships, and daily frustrations Carmen also chants in Old English and closes with the opening prayer from The Cloud of Unknowing, spoken in English and sung in Middle English.
