In 1968, Dubai had about sixty thousand people, one bridge, and almost no paved roads. Today it has the tallest building on Earth and one of the world's busiest airports. This video tells the full story of Dubai: from Iron Age copper workshops and the first mention of its name in 1095, through the pearl divers, the 1833 settlement of Dubai Creek, British protection and the tax-free port of 1901, the pearl crash, Sheikh Rashid's creek, ports and airline, the birth of the UAE in 1971, the Burj Khalifa, the 2009 debt crisis, the workers who built the city, Expo 2020, and the Iranian strikes of 2026. We credit what Dubai built and tell the workers' story too. 0:00 – Introduction: How Dubai Rose in 50 Years 1:02 – Ancient Roots & Dubai Creek 2:03 – 1833: The Al Maktoum Dynasty & Pearl Diving Era 2:56 – 1901: The Tax-Free Port & Merchant Haven 3:47 – The Pearl Market Collapse & The 1930s Depression 4:33 – Sheikh Rashid’s Gamble: Dredging the Creek & Oil Discovery 5:20 – Port Rashid, Jebel Ali & The UAE Federation (1971) 6:22 – 1985: The Launch of Emirates Airline 7:14 – Megaprojects: Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah & Burj Khalifa 8:56 – The 2008–2009 Financial Crash & Debt Restructuring 9:31 – The Workers Behind the Skyline 10:36 – Expo 2020, Golden Visas & The D33 Economic Boom 12:02 – 2026: Regional Tensions & The Open Door Under Stress 13:17 – Conclusion: Location, Risk & The Future of Dubai SOURCES & FURTHER READING Davidson, Christopher M.
