Bravestarr, Developed by Probe Software and Published by GO! In 1987.
“The evil Tex Hex has captured Shamen, the mystic indian, so that he may gain favour with the evil titanic phantom Stampede, and rule New Texas. Marshall Bravestarr is the only hope of survival.”
Interesting game released on the main 3 8bit home computers each with slight differences to each other. It plays like a small adventure game with you running left-right picking up objects (well...object) and then taking it to the relevant place, gaining information on Shamen’s whereabouts and then the final showdown with Stampede. Sounds simple enough but then there is the ingame timer representing 9 days. It is pretty brutal as you lose lots of time when dying from taking a single hit from a projectile and also losing time when you collide with an enemy. After a couple of deaths there is not enough time to complete the game.
While all 3 versions are difficult, I think the C64 version is the most difficult of all as its difficult to kill enemies quickly and the enemy projectiles move pretty fast. There are two power ups which drop randomly. One to stop time momentarily and the other to make you gun more powerful for a few seconds. In the spectrum version, the power ups are plentiful but are used sparingly in the C64 version. The amstrad and spectrum version share the same title screen but the C64 is quite different. The C64 version also has the option of a great soundtrack by David Whitaker playing throughout. The Spectrum has a beeper rendition of it for its title screen and the Amstrad has a different tune entirely. This is a game I like to revisit quite often, mainly for the music but it is more fun to play with a trainer.
In the longplay I show a full run with music followed by a partial run with sound effects which kind of reminds me of rygar on the Spectrum and shows the game over screen.
