The Faroe Islands are ridiculously beautiful. They’re also quite capable of cancelling your afternoon before you’ve even landed 😅 I’ve just been back, and these are 12 things I wish I had known before visiting the Faroe Islands. I’d been before, I have a good friend who lives there driving us around, and I still came home with a few notes for next time 🤓 🏨 HOTELS MENTIONED & ALTERNATIVES Hotel Føroyar, where I stayed: https://destinationwellknown.com/link... Hotel Hafnia, for a central location in Tórshavn: https://destinationwellknown.com/link... Havgrím Seaside Hotel 1948, a smaller waterfront option: https://destinationwellknown.com/link... My full guide on where to stay in the Faroe Islands with more hotel recommendations: https://destinationwellknown.com/wher... What to expect when you visit the Faroe Islands? So... Our boat trip was cancelled about two hours before departure. We went to Múlafossur instead, where the sun was shining and the sea made it fairly obvious why we weren’t getting on a boat. The following morning, we checked the webcams and drove towards the better weather. That worked rather well ☀️ So this is a Faroe Islands travel guide for the practical side of the trip. Should you hire a car? Where should you stay? Which hikes charge an entrance fee, and where can you get a spectacular view without spending three hours walking to it? I also share my experience at Hotel Føroyar, where I paid around $370 a night for a deluxe room with a sea view. The view was fantastic. The room was comfortable, but for that money I expected a bit more. If being able to walk out for dinner matters to you, I’d look more closely at central Tórshavn. There’s advice on planning a puffin trip to Mykines, checking your phone’s roaming allowance, buying alcohol and visiting those lovely little wooden houses without accidentally becoming part of somebody’s afternoon... And leave some time for Sandoy. We had wind, a bit of rain, a rainbow over the coastline and hardly another person around. Some of my favourite moments of the whole trip happened there. You don’t need to be a serious hiker to enjoy the Faroes. You do need decent shoes, some flexibility and a willingness to accept that the weather gets the final say.
