The level design towards this portion of the game has continued to get worse and worse. It was very jarring going from Blighttown, a well planned gymnasium of an area, to Demon Ruins and Lost Izaliths, with their vast stretches of empty space wastelands littered with occasional clusters of enemy spam, and far too frequent yet unwarpable bonfires. What happened to the interconnected, labyrinthian level design here? They felt like a secluded cutout of linear areas compared to the rest of the game, with little payoff or incentive to veer off the paved path.
Tomb of the Giants was somehow even more egregious. I was half expecting a complicated expanse of paths tucked within the dark, but no, it was just troll ambushfest galore, with truly little to explore. I guess they used the near pitch black to hide how little there actually was in that area. Don't get me started on the silly runback to Gravelord Nito, or the Pinwheel enemy spam almost right after it was a boss proper, or the fact that you're forced an obscene amount of fall damage entering the boss arena, or the boss design of Gravelord Nito itself. Good grief.
Duke's Archives is a much more interestingly designed area, reminiscent of most of the game, but I was not at all satisfied with how they handled the jail section, to say the least. Being unable to pick up the required key drop the first time was ridiculous.
For the time being, at least I'm still picking up relatively cool weapons. But there haven't really been cool bosses for which I could use them.
