For days, Chick #1 endured an unbearable battle with suspected Trichomoniasis. Unable to swallow food, she could only watch her younger siblings being fed right in front of her—and now, those days of suffering have finally come to an end. Chick #1 entered the world on October 1st at 6:46 AM, full of vitality and surrounded by our joy and blessings as she brought the very first hope to the nest. Soon, her siblings hatched one after another, and together as a family of four, they grew strong under the devoted care of their parents, enduring both the scorching sun and heavy rains. (Tragically, another sibling would later lose its life to the harsh heat, leaving three.) However, just past thirty days of life, Chick #1 was struck by an unexpected and cruel illness, beginning a painful trial that would test her frail body to its absolute limits. Without nourishment, a chick would normally collapse on the spot. Yet, driven by a deep instinct to survive, she mobilized her last energy to keep standing on that cold ledge at 35 days old. Her body had surely reached its limit long before. Only on that night, mother was nowhere to be seen. High in the darkness, 150 meters up, Chick #1 fell from the ledge. Perhaps it was a simple loss of balance while stretching, but it felt to me as if, in her proud solitude, she had chosen her first—and last—flight. Either way, the way she endured those extraordinarily cruel final days was the mark of a true warrior. Never in all my years of observing wild birds have I seen a chick meet its end with such dignity. In Japan, there is a traditional proverb: "立つ鳥跡を濁さず (Tatsu tori ato o nigosazu)," which speaks of leaving a place clean and beautiful when you depart. Chick #1's final journey felt to me like the embodiment of that spirit—a graceful departure. Fly high and free into the peaceful sky, brave little one. We will never forget your noble spirit. Rest in peace. Located about 150 metres above ground in Melbourne’s CBD, this nesting site has been observed continuously since 1991, making it one of the city’s most famous wildlife spots. ◾️History of Nesting at 367 Collins 【1991–1992: Origins and Establishment】 In 1991, Dr. Victor Hurley discovered that a pair of falcons had failed to hatch eggs laid in the building’s metal gutter. The following year, in 1992, a purpose-built wooden nesting box (a “scrape box”) filled with sand was installed on the building’s high-rise terrace. The falcons took to it, and have returned to raise chicks there every year since. 【2004–2005: Tragedy and a New Generation】 In 2004, a tragic incident occurred in which the resident pair was harmed after eating an illegally poisoned pigeon. However, the following year, in 2005, a new pair took over this prime nesting spot, and it once again became an active breeding site. 【2017–Present: Livestreaming and Global Popularity】 Once viewable only via a monitor in the building’s lobby, a 24-hour webcam was installed in 2017, launching an internet livestream. The nest gained a surge of attention especially during COVID-era lockdowns, and it has since become a beloved spot watched by tens of thousands of fans around the world. ◾️Video courtesy of 367 Collins Falcons    / @367collinsfalcons4   367 Collins Falcons 2025 - South facing https://www.youtube.com/live/oibsohQ1... 367 Collins Falcons 2025 - North facing https://www.youtube.com/live/dNKk0ivu...
