On 11 May 1996, Beck Weathers got up from the snow on Everest's South Col and walked back into camp. That morning the people who found him had judged him beyond saving, and in Texas his wife had been told he was dead.
This film follows Beck and the guides, climbers and Sherpas caught in the storm of 10 and 11 May 1996, when eight people died on two sides of the mountain: the summit day, the storm, the night on the South Col, the walk back, the second night and the long way down and home. It also explains the storm and the death zone that trapped them.
No photograph or footage from May 1996 appears in this film. Most scenes are AI-generated story illustrations and period reconstructions; they are not recordings of the people or the events, and no named person's face is shown. The thumbnail is generated artwork. Modern photographs and footage show the real places or similar conditions, not 1996. Maps and explanatory 3D scenes are studio renders.
Accounts draw on Beck Weathers's memoir and interviews, Jon Krakauer's reporting for Outside, David Breashears's FRONTLINE film Storm Over Everest, Ed Viesturs's account, and G. W. K. Moore and John L. Semple's 2006 analysis of the storm.
