In the summer of 1858, London's River Thames, an open sewer for three million people, baked in a heatwave and smelled so bad that Parliament soaked its curtains in chloride of lime and talked about leaving town. The panic produced Joseph Bazalgette's sewers, one of the great engineering works of the Victorian age, built to stop a smell that everyone thought was deadly. They were wrong about the smell, and right to build the sewers anyway.
